How Many Credit Cards Should I Have?
  + stars: | 2023-10-10 | by ( Gerri Detweiler | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +17 min
Use this guide to identify what kind of credit card user you are—and how many credit cards you should have. A secured credit card can be a smart option if you don’t have a very good credit score. Most small business credit cards require a good personal credit score and sufficient income from all sources, not just the business. However, many business credit cards don’t appear on consumer credit reports, which means they don’t impact your credit scores as long as you pay on time. Similar to choosing a personal credit card, pick your business credit cards based on your spending habits.

My Family of 5 Flies for the Price of 3—Here’s How

From our home in Denver, my wife, three kids and I often travel to visit family in Florida, California, Georgia and New York. And when I travel for work as a professional credit card reviewer and consultant, I often bring a kid or two along. My path to companion pass bliss came through Southwest credit cards, such as the Southwest Rapid Rewards Priority Credit Card, but frequent flights can also get you there. As our family grew, my wife also began earning a Companion Pass, allowing the whole family to travel at a steep discount. For example, the Southwest Rapid Rewards Priority Credit Card offers 50,000 bonus points when you spend just $1,000 in the first three months.

The great majority of our almost 4 million federal employees would be furloughed without pay. But strikingly, one group of federal employees would not stop receiving their paychecks: members of Congress. Article I, Section 6 of the Constitution requires that members of Congress be paid while in office. What would it mean if those members of Congress who forced a shutdown of the government faced the same economic consequences as the average AFGE employee? The division between making the plan and living the plan is not inevitable or universal.

Staff, meanwhile, have been forced to put their real jobs on hold to prepare for the looming shutdown. National parksThe National Park Service plans to close its parks and furlough park rangers if the government shuts down on Sunday. During the 2018-2019 shutdown, the parks themselves remained accessible, but without most services. Some presidential libraries would remain open as long as they have sufficient funds, but others would close and research services would be reduced. A shutdown would result in a "data blackout" of critical economic statistics that influence markets and businesses around the globe.

CNN —Republicans are about to deliver on the driving purpose of their House majority – enacting Donald Trump’s retribution. Rather than try to solve the crisis, hardline House Republicans are driving the country toward a shutdown that Trump ordered up on social media, insisting it will will damage Biden, his potential general election rival. The two showdowns – and the return to power of Trump’s movement in the House – could shape the fate of the Republican House majority, which was narrowly won in last year’s midterm elections. But paradoxically, the tiny House majority – McCarthy can only lose four votes and still pass legislation on a party line – has given the most extreme GOP members more leverage. Some House Republicans are now refusing to vote for any temporary spending extension expected to come over from the Senate.

CNN —With only three days to go before government funding expires, Congress is barreling toward a shutdown with the House and Senate at an impasse over a path forward. The White House is sounding alarms about massive disruptions to air travel as tens of thousands of air traffic controllers and Transportation Security Administration personnel work without pay. The White House has warned that a shutdown could risk “significant delays for travelers” across the country. The White House has also warned of impacts to national security, including the 1.3 million active-duty troops who would not get paid during a shutdown. The House is expected to vote on a GOP stopgap bill on Friday, though nothing has been scheduled as of yet.

Against this precarious backdrop, Washington is on the verge of a messy shutdown of the federal government. A shutdown probably won’t wreck the economy, especially if it’s short. And if it a shutdown lasts long enough, it could, along with these other headwinds, do some real damage. The US Travel Association estimates the domestic travel economy would lose as much as $140 million a day from a government shutdown. “Uncertainty regarding federal operations will likely persist for the next few months.”Given all the other obstacles facing the economy, chaos in Washington is the last thing the economy needs.

The U.S. Travel Association said a partial shutdown would cost the U.S. travel economy as much as $140 million a day. During a government shutdown, the U.S. air travel system would be "hampered by more flight delays, longer screening lines and setbacks in air travel modernization," the group said. Air traffic controllers and Transportation Security Administration (TSA) security officers are among the government workers who would be required to keep working but would not be paid. A government watchdog report said in June that air traffic operations were at risk. The FAA was forced to slow air traffic putting pressure on lawmakers to end the standoff.

Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg warns that might make air travel worse. The impacts on air travel will be immediate, Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg told Insider. The DOT has been making strides in curbing travel nightmares: Throughout 2023, air travel cancellations have stayed below 2%, according to the Air Travel Consumer Report — a far cry from the 2.7% cancellation rate in 2022. Across the country, federal workers still stung by the memories of past government shutdowns are grimacing and bracing for another potential extended closure. Johnny J. Jones, secretary-treasurer of the TSA workers unit within the AFGE, said even a temporary loss in pay is a massive disruption for government workers who live paycheck to paycheck. LaPointe, a mother of four who is also a union leader for 30,000 Social Security workers through AFGE, said a shutdown would be “a catastrophe" personally. A Partnership for Public Service survey ranks the Social Security Administration last among agencies in the “Best Places to Work” government-wide index. “We don’t often feel like it’s worth it to be federal employees at the time of a shutdown,” LaPointe said.

The Office of Management and Budget reminded senior agency officials Friday to update and review shutdown plans. Those plans can vary from shutdown to shutdown. The nearly 4 million Americans who are federal employees will feel the effect immediately. Essential workers will remain on the job, but others will be furloughed until the shutdown is over. For many of them, a shutdown would strain their finances, as it did during the record 35-day funding lapse in 2018-2019.

What could happen if the government shuts down

Congressional leaders on both sides of the aisle are hoping to pass a short-term funding extension to keep the lights on and avert a shutdown. What could happen during a shutdownIn the event of a shutdown, many government operations would come to a halt, but some services deemed “essential” would continue. Once a shutdown is over, federal employees who were required to work and those who were furloughed will receive backpay. Employees deemed “essential” and required to work were already guaranteed backpay after a shutdown prior to the passage of that legislation. And federal employees aren’t the only ones who can feel the effects of a shutdown.

Trump attorney Sidney Powell is trying to dismiss a racketeering charge in Georgia against her. One of her lawyers' reasons is that the indictment has ruined her "previously sterling" reputation. That includes her no longer being a "trusted traveler" with TSA, they said in a Friday motion. As one of 19 co-defendants, Powell has pleaded not guilty to the seven charges brought against her, including conspiracy to commit election fraud, conspiracy to defraud the state, and racketeering. One of their supporting arguments was that the indictment had tarnished the "previously sterling reputations" of Powell and the other defendants.

If members of Congress don't come to an agreement in 9 days, the government will shut down. A Democratic member of Congress just introduced a bill withholding their pay during a shutdown. On Wednesday afternoon, Craig announced that she had formally introduced the "My Constituents Cannot Afford Rebellious Tantrums, Handle Your Shutdown Act," also known as the "MCCARTHY Shutdown Act," with the expressed desire to halt members' pay for as long as the government remains shut down. If it ultimately passes, members of Congress will receive the full amount that was deducted from their paychecks at the end of the congressional session. Inter-group fighting between GOP members in the House has prevented House Speaker Kevin McCarthy from actually bringing a funding bill to the floor.

However, Republicans can't get it together to figure out a way out of a shutdown. A vote on a GOP funding resolution was yanked on Tuesday, and another on a defense bill failed. After the vote, McCarthy walked off the floor, according to PBS . "These consequences are real and avoidable — but only if House Republicans stop playing political games with peoples' lives and catering to the ideological demands of their most extreme, far-right members," the memo said. "It's time for House Republicans to abide by the bipartisan budget agreement that a majority of them voted for, keep the government open, and address other urgent needs for the American people."

Is there an election coming up by any chance?”While some individual schools and colleges have implemented temporary mask requirements, there is no sign that anyone in federal or state leadership is considering widespread COVID-19 restrictions, requirements or mask mandates. “No COVID-19 public health restrictions or mask requirements are being considered by the Murphy administration," said Christi Peace, spokesperson for New Jersey Gov. It was largely the same message from Democratic governors’ offices in several other states that responded to an inquiry about whether any COVID-19 mandates were under consideration. “Currently, COVID-19 lockdowns and mask mandates are not being discussed and the governor has no plans to institute these measures,” she said. Reinstated mask requirements across the country have so far been limited to a handful of local schools and businesses.
